Works for Me!

It's another fabulous edition of Works for Me Wednesday. Today's edition comes in reverse. I ask a question, you tell me and answer, if you have one. A couple hundred others are participating in this via We Are THAT Family. Take a look at the questions people are asking today. Maybe you'll find a question you've been needing to ask, and get that question answered!

My questions for today (there are two of them):

1. I have my kitchen cabinets all sanded and primed. I am going to paint them white. Does anybody have any suggestions on how I can get the paint smooth so brush strokes don't show?

2. Do you have an awesome crockpot recipe for chicken? I'm totally in love with my crock pot, but I'm getting tired of the 6 good recipes I have found for it.

Thanks for participating!!!

1. Use a paint roller if you can instead of paint brush.

2. Taco Chicken (hopefully you don't have this one)
Place 4 Frozen chicken breasts, 1/2 large jar of salsa, and one pouch of taco seasoning into your crockpot and cook on low for 8-10 hours. Shred the chicken with a fork and serve over rice, or on a wheat tortilla, or on a bed of lettuce. Toppings can be diced tomatoes, lettuce, sour cream, rice, corn, black beans, refried beans. It is very versitile and easy.

I recently painted our cabinets and got a mini sponge roller -- it worked beautifully.

Chicken recipes? Our favorite is a recipe with chicken, sour cream, mushrooms and cream of mushroom soup. http://leafcutterdesigns.com/shop.html

Hope this helps!

Use a SMALL FOAM roller, They are about 3 inches wide and 1 inch in diameter (totally guessing on that). No brush strokes!
That is how we did ours and they are perfect.

Well, I don't have a good answer for #1 because we JUST redid our kitchen and painted the cabinets white, but we have some professional painter friends that own a sprayer so that is how we got a smooth look.

As far as #2 I have a couple recipes on my blog if you want to check them out, but I am always looking for more crock pot recipes, that's for sure.

This one is not chicken, but it's so easy and delicious

You could use a small roller for your kitchen cabinets, at least on the sides and part of the fronts. That would eliminate brush strokes.

Here are my three favorite crockpot recipes:

Mexican Chicken Tortilla Soup

Chicken Goop (or Chicken and Rice) and Salsa Chicken Tacos

I am not sure about the painting question but if you like I can ask my hubby in the morning since he is a painter. (That's probably why I have no clue how to do that cause I let him do all of the painting!)

As for crock pot recipes. I make pork chops and chicken on the bone the same way:

Spray your crock pot bottom with non-stick cooking spray.
Throw in the meat
toss in a chopped onion, maybe some chopped garlic if you want.
Sprinkle some seasoning salt on top
Pour about one full bottle of bbq sauce on top. (you can make your own too)
Cover and cook on low for about 4-5 hours. Until done.

This makes some tasty BBQ pork chops or chicken. You can cook BBQ ribs this way too. Enjoy!

Hi! I'd recommend renting a paint sprayer. Gabe could talk Matt thru if he hasn't used one before, and it will make your cabinets look streak-free and professionally done! :)

Here's one of our fave recipes, which we serve on rice one night then with tortillas the next:

Aztec Chicken

3-5 frozen chicken breasts
1 cup salsa
1 15 oz can black beans, drained
2 c. frozen corn
1 garlic clove, minced
Cumin (however much you like!)
1/2 - 1 whole red pepper, chopped

Cook on low for 4-6 hrs. Can easily be adjusted if you want to use less chicken and more beans, and we've also added some cream cheese in the last hr of cooking. Also yummy with Costco's mango salsa...

Enjoy those kitties! Can't wait to check out the other recipes...

I cannot answer your question about the paint - not sure on that one.

The chicken recipe though - I have the salsa chicken one... aren't you the person that already has one like that? If you don't, email me and I'll email you mine. :)

So Emily, I asked the hubby how you could get a really smooth look on your cabinets with no brush marks and Oh my do I have a long winded expert advise from him! First of all he says if you are using Oil based paint you will need a product called Penetrol. If you are using latex paint then you will need Floetrol. You can get it at any paint store. He says you will also have to have 220 grit sand paper, dusting cloth, vacuum and a tack cloth. He said to use a good brush not a roller because the roller will leave stipple marks. He said you have to do a process that might take longer than you planned if you want the end result. First you sand your cabinets with the sand paper, then dust them off and vacuum out the crevices then wipe the tack cloth and paint with very light coats of your paint mixed with Floetrol/Penetrol. If you don't use light coats with little paint on the brush then the paint will run. He said you then wait for that to dry and then do the whole process of sanding, wiping...all over again. He said you would need about 3 coats maybe more. I am sure that is not the answer you wanted but he said you will get a super smooth look like you wanted.
I hope that helps. At least you know how to do it. Stop by my blog again sometime. It was nice to meet you.
I like your blog very much and I will be back to see you again.

Hey Em,
I have found that spraying doors leaves them super smooth. I wish we lived closer and I would let you borrow ours! Ask around or maybe you could rentt one for a day...

Easy and always a hit with the kiddos: BBQ Crock Pot Chicken

Just add your desired amount of chicken pieces, enough bbq sauce to cover the chicken and cook on low all day.
