What I've Learned

Last week was super busy, so I didn't do much blogging. I skipped my What I've Learned post on Tuesday. How sad!

Here's what I've learned the past 2 weeks.

1. Don't fly United. If you realy want to know more about this, read my blog from last Thursday.

2. Investing in something eternal is the most satisfying feeling!

3. There are an approximately 18,000 children under the age of 18 who live in poverty in our county. Not country...county. It is very easy to help. Rice Depot's Food for Kids program collects donations of kid-friendly, ready-to-eat foods. They then fill backpacks with the food, and distribute the backpacks to hungry kids through the schools. The kids pick up their backpacks anonymously, and are able to eat on evenings and weekends. Our Awana program collected a huge amount of food for this program in April. If it isn't already going in Snapper's new school, I'm going to try to start it in September. While Rice Depot is specific to Arkansas, I know other states have similar programs. It is so easy to make a difference! I recommend looking into it.

4. Potty training a boy is the polar opposite of potty training a girl.

5. Corn Pops are hard to clean off the floor...even dry Corn Pops. After you've managed to clean them off the floor and out of your broom, the floor is a sticky mess.

6. Kittens grow very fast. They are way more fun at one month old than they are at one week!

7. Ice cream tastes better after dark! There's this great frozen custard place in Central Arkansas. It has become an addiction for me on warm, muggy nights. After the kids are in bed and Debbie home, Matt and I like to jump in the car and make the trek to get frozen custard. It is totally worth the drive!!! Unlike ice cream, frozen custard is super creamy and is satiny in your mouth. To make it even better, they will mix in your favorite candy bar or fruit! Matt alternates between vanilla with Reese's and vanilla with cookie dough. I always get the same thing: chocolate with Reese's. This has become our favorite date. We sit outside on warm evenings, eating custard, talking, and slapping away the infamous bugs of Arkansas.

8. Awana is the most worthwhile program you can put your child in. This isn't really something new. I've known it for years. I'm just reminded of it again. Snapper has memorized somewhere around 200 verses this year. This is because she has been motivated to earn memory awards. I'm proud of the work she has put in, and proud of the awards she will be receiving next week. But way more than that, I'm thrilled that she is actively hiding God's Word in her heart. Many years down the road, the awards will be gone. But the truth will remain in her heart. I know this from personal experience. I went through Awana as a child.

9. I love working one day a week! I'm more productive at home because I can get something concrete accomplished at work.

10. I love thunderstorms, but I'm missing the sun. We've had rain or thunderstorms every day for the last 9 days, and we have rain and thunderstorms in the forecast every day for the next 6 days. I love you, sunshine!

Those kittens are adorable!!!

And frozen custard, huh? I've never heard of that before, but now I might need to hunt some down!

Love your list.

There is a frozen custard place near us, but it's about 25 minutes away, so we don't get to go there very often. I always enjoy it when we do, though.

Awana is fabulous. I wish our church offered it, but we're kind of small.

And kittens DO grow fast. I remember well the one little kitty I had a long time ago. I couldn't believe how fast he changed. They are SO precious though.

Thanks for the idea from the Rice Depot. My husband teaches at residental school in Hershey, Pa for kids who come from Poverty, but it is alwasy good to know to how to get them to serve!
